About The Role

Lincs Laboratory is a specialist in-house service of the Highways Services of Lincolnshire County Council.  The laboratory is based at Riseholme on the northern edge of Lincoln and has a varied workload which includes construction materials testing, pavement and geotechnical investigations, highway condition surveys and the capture and analysis of traffic data.

The Laboratory is UKAS accredited to ISO17025 and we are committed to providing an efficient, competitive and high-quality service to the County Council and our other clients which include public and private sector consulting engineers, suppliers and contractors.

Every day brings its own unique experiences; one day you could be out driving around the county conducting on-site tests and retrieving samples from highway sites and then the next day testing them in our purpose-built Laboratory.

We are not a conventional ‘white coat and test tube’ clean laboratory, we are more like an indoor building site! You won’t get too dirty though, as we provide all your work wear.

There will be a requirement to undertake some manual handling of materials with weights up to 25kg. The role may involve some weekend and night working for which enhanced rates will be paid.

About You

This position would suit an individual with a keen interest in science or engineering who is keen to take on a varied and rewarding role. Working in the laboratory is a good introduction to a career in the Highway industry.

For this role you will need to possess good literacy, numeracy and administration skills with the ability to write legibly and undertake to British and European Standards and specifications.

Most importantly we are looking for the following qualities;

  • Enthusiasm and initiative mathematical calculations. You’ll also need to be able to follow detailed instructions and procedures in order to undertake testing activities.
  • Excellent communication and team working.
  • Practical and pragmatic yet adaptable to change and circumstance.
  • Dexterous to undertake testing work both in the lab and outdoors.

As this post can be agile around our county, you must possess a complete and valid manual UK driver's license along with access to a vehicle.

Full training will be given and you will have the opportunity to obtain a nationally recognised qualification. This is a career grade position and upon successful completion of our structured training and development programme there is scope to progress to the post of Senior Operations Technician at Grade G6 (£27,803-30,296).

Experienced candidates will be appointed at a grade commensurate with qualifications and experience.
